Event Details

In 2023 we commemorated the 400th anniversary of the death of William Byrd, one of England’s great composers. For this concert we will turn back the clock an additional 400 years and trace the history of English music from the oldest notated examples to the time of King Henry VIII and the English reformation.

You will hear a mix of sacred and secular works in Middle English and Latin; songs that survive because they were scribbled on the back of an official document as well as compositions that were widely distributed beyond England’s borders.
