Event Details

All are invited to attend “Visual Notes” an exhibition by graphic recordings artist, Raheem Nelson–a New Haven-based artist with a BFA in cartooning. The show features works produced on behalf  of local businesses and nonprofit organizations seeking to raise community awareness. An opening reception is planned for Thursday, November 7 from 5 – 7 PM. This event is free and open to the public.

With a strong background in traditional cartooning and oil painting, Raheem developed a skill called “Graphic Recording.” He attends meetings or events and creates infographics, on the spot, to convey all the important information and ideas discussed.

This exhibition, funded by an American Rescue Plan grant and developed in collaboration with New Haven Dept. of Arts, Culture & Tourism & The Arts Council, of Greater New Haven allowed Raheem to create graphic recordings for twenty New Haven organizations.

The Opening Reception (November 7th) will feature a live podcast (that Raheem will graphic record live) of a conversation hosted by The Rhythm & Brews Podcast. Artists Tea Montgomery, Jean Paul Germain, Brandon Fletcher & filmmaker, Yves Wilson will be in conversation about the importance of the arts and their professional careers.

The recordings that came from these community events have been collected and printed on canvases for all to enjoy. Raheem views his graphic recordings as a means “to support, uplift and use words and pictures to convey a powerful narrative.”

The show runs through December 2 at Creative Arts Workshop’s Hilles Gallery.
