Mickalene Thomas / Portrait of an Unlikely Space
Mickalene Thomas is an acclaimed artist known for her stunning paintings, photographs, and installations featuring Black women in opulent interiors. In her latest exhibition, Mickalene Thomas / Portrait of an Unlikely Space, she presents a new multigallery installation inspired by the pre-Emancipation era, featuring early American portraits of Black women, men, and children.

Ornament
This installation showcases over 40 prints and drawings from the Yale University Art Gallery’s collection, along with three musical instruments from the Yale School of Music. Together, they demonstrate the migration of motifs over time and distance, from paper to instruments.
