New Haven Green
City: New Haven
College, Chapel, Church, and Elm streets border the New Haven Green. The New Haven Green is recognized as a National Historic Landmark. It stands out as one of the nine squares in the city’s 1638 village plan, marking New Haven as the first planned city in the US.
The English Puritans, who founded the city in 1638, contributed to New Haven Green’s fascinating history. They originally envisioned it as a central square for a marketplace, parade ground, and venue for public events
The Green is approximately 16 acres divided into the Upper Green and the Lower Green. The area features pathways, trees, and benches. According to legend, the Puritans designed the Green to be large enough to accommodate the 144,000 people they believed would ascend during the Second Coming of Christ.
The Green hosts three historic churches: Center Church on the Green (Congregational), United Church on the Green (United Church of Christ), Trinity Church on the Green (Episcopal), and the New Haven County Courthouse, a neoclassical building symbolizing justice and government.
