Thomas C. Duffy, Music Director. Program:
• “Afro-American Symphony” by William Grant Still is the first full orchestral symphony composed by an African American and premiered for a US audience by a leading orchestra, the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra. This 4-movement wind band transcription retains the blues progressions, rhythms, and folk elements that reflect Still’s 1930s musical style.
• “New England Triptych” (William Schuman) is based on the choral music of William Billings, an early-American New England composer. Written in three sections, Be Glad Then, America, is noble and majestic; When Jesus Wept is a sensitive framing of the sacred verse; and Chester is the American Revolutionary hymn and marching song that served as the de facto colonial national anthem. David Mills (Director of Bands [emeritus], University of Connecticut), guest conductor.
• “In Between” (Aaron Israel Levin) takes its inspiration from movies about making movies (like Federico Fellini’s 8½ or David Lynch’s Mulholland Drive), where the lives of fictitious filmmakers “off-set” often become intermingled with the film they’re attempting to make. The title refers to what happens in between “takes,” and the inevitable merging of off- and on-set. (Premiere of wind band version).
• Ron Nelson’s “Medieval Suite” is an homage to three great master choral composers of the Middle Ages: Leonin (middle 12th century), Perotin (c. 1155-1200), and Machaut (c. 1300-1377).

The Caribbean Diaspora has always had an impactful contingent in various areas of the United States of America.
Caribbean Nationals have been a part of the rich culture of New Haven since the 1900’s or longer. In 2014 under the Distinguished Patronage of Hon. Mayor Toni N. Harp and the City of New Haven we were invited to showcase our rich culture at City Hall. We had approximately 200 people sharing, learning, reminiscing, tasting and just overall having a “gran ole time”.
The celebration has turned into an annual festival named The New Haven Caribbean Heritage Festival to enjoy performances, delicious Caribbean cuisine, beautiful displays of islands and colorful costumes. This year will be the 8th anniversary of the festival, aptly hosted in June which is dubbed National Caribbean American Heritage Month.
This year, we are returning to downtown New Haven on the upper Green, thanks to our partnership with the International Festival of Arts & Ideas.
In true Caribbean Style – FAMILY TIME, MUSIC, DANCING & FOOD.

Craft Expo is one of the most successful and long-running craft shows in America. Over 175 modern makers from across the country will display and sell their fine craft in a variety of media, including Clay, Food, Glass, Leather, Metal and Non-Metal Jewelry, Wearable and Non-Wearable Fiber, Metal, Mixed Media, Painting, Photography, Printmaking, and Wood.
“We are so happy to welcome back our artists and supporters to the
Guilford green this summer for Craft Expo” says Maureen Belden, GAC Executive
Director. “There is great excitement to gather together again and to experience
art and artmaking in person. People tell us one of the greatest parts of their
Craft Expo experience is interacting with the artists and learning more about
their work and creative process. And the artists are also so thankful to be
able to share their work with our visitors. It will be a very positive
experience for everyone involved.”
Popular activities for Craft Expo visitors include a Family Art
Tent for young visitors, silent auction of exhibitor-donated work, live craft
demonstrations by Guilford Art Center faculty and students, and sale of
Guilford Art Center student work. Attendees can enjoy a snack or meal in the
food truck area, which will also feature live musical entertainment throughout
the weekend.
Craft Expo is the Guilford Art Center’s single most important
fundraiser, providing proceeds that support all of its educational and
community programming.
