Yale Bowl

City: West Haven

The Yale Bowl, which marked its 100th anniversary in 2014, is notable for its storied place in American sports. Opening on November 21, 1914, it was initially the world’s largest stadium with a full-enclosure design, debuting with a football game against Harvard. Aside from college football, it has hosted NFL games, international soccer, lacrosse, concerts, and even the 1995 Special Olympics World Games. The Bowl covers 12.5 acres, measuring 930 by 750 feet, with a reduced seating capacity of 61,446 from an original 70,869 following renovations. It holds the distinction of accommodating over 70,000 fans 20 times, peaking at 80,000 during a 1923 match against Army. The Yale Bowl was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1987.
