On National Wine Day, celebrated each year on May 25, we raise a glass to Greater New Haven’s rich winemaking tradition—and its unique place in wine history. Alongside its scenic vineyards and acclaimed wines, this region holds a special distinction: the corkscrew was invented here. In 1860, New Havener Philios P. Blake patented the first American corkscrew, forever changing how we open a bottle.
